This places constant tension on the fibrous bands, eventually stretching them out. While it preserves ducts, it carries a risk of infection and is not a guaranteed permanent solution.
Recovery Timeline
Recovery from inverted nipple correction is generally relatively quick compared to more invasive breast surgeries, but it requires diligent post-operative care to prevent recurrence.
- Immediate Post-Op (Days 1–3): Patients will experience soreness, swelling, and bruising in the nipple area. A protective dressing or "doughnut" splint is often placed over the nipple to keep it elevated and prevent retraction. Ice packs and pain medication are recommended to manage discomfort.

- Recurrence of Inversion: This is the most common complication. If the fibrous bands reform or if the sutures pull through the tissue before healing is complete, the nipple may retract again. Revision surgery may be necessary.
- Loss of Nipple Sensation: Temporary numbness is common due to nerve swelling. However, in rare cases, particularly with severe corrections, permanent numbness or hypersensitivity can occur.
- Inability to Breastfeed: As noted, duct-division techniques sever the milk ducts. Even with duct-sparing techniques, there is no absolute guarantee that breastfeeding function will remain intact.
