The ideal candidate is generally in good physical health, does not smoke, and possesses realistic expectations regarding the outcome of the procedure. Patients with elastic skin and mild to moderate skin laxity tend to respond best, as the skin can retract and conform to the new contours effectively.
Conversely, individuals with active acne, very dark skin tones, or certain connective tissue disorders may not be suitable candidates. Darker skin carries a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. Additionally, patients who have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) within the previous 12 to 18 months are generally advised against the procedure due to an increased risk of scarring. Long-Term Recovery (Weeks 2–12): Redness is the most common lingering side effect, fading gradually over weeks or months. It can persist for up to six months with aggressive CO2 treatments. Sun avoidance is critical during this phase. Patients must apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily and wear wide-brimmed hats, as the new skin is highly susceptible to UV damage and hyperpigmentation.
While laser skin resurfacing is generally safe when performed by a qualified professional, it carries potential risks and side effects. Common temporary side effects include redness, swelling, itching, and a sensation of tightness in the skin.
The financial investment for laser skin resurfacing varies widely based on geographic location, the expertise of the provider, the type of laser used, and the extent of the area being treated. Because this is considered a cosmetic procedure, it is rarely covered by medical insurance unless it is being performed to remove precancerous growths or scar revision resulting from trauma.
