Dr. Sepehr Lalezari - Plastic Surgeon in Los Angeles, CA

Rigorous Medical Education and Training

Dr. Lalezari earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine, where he distinguished himself as a scholar with a keen interest in surgical innovation and patient outcomes research. At UCLA, he completed a rigorous curriculum that emphasized both foundational biomedical sciences and clinical rotations across a spectrum of specialties, fostering a deep appreciation for interdisciplinary collaboration. His academic excellence was recognized through numerous honors, including the Dean’s List and a research fellowship that produced peer‑reviewed publications on tissue healing and scar modulation. This formative period solidified his resolve to pursue a career that blends technical expertise with a compassionate, evidence‑based approach to patient care.

Following medical school, Dr. Lalezari embarked on a General Surgery Residency at Keck Hospital of USC, a program renowned for its high surgical volume, diverse case mix, and commitment to resident education. During his five‑year residency, he honed his operative dexterity across a broad array of procedures, ranging from complex abdominal reconstructions to trauma surgery. He earned accolades for his operative efficiency, critical thinking under pressure, and leadership within the multidisciplinary care teams. Throughout his residency, Dr. Lalezari actively contributed to quality improvement initiatives, implementing protocols that reduced postoperative infection rates and shortened hospital stays, thereby demonstrating his early dedication to patient safety and system‑wide excellence.

To further specialize, Dr. Lalezari completed a Fellowship in Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine, an institution at the forefront of metabolic surgery research and innovation. This fellowship afforded him the opportunity to master advanced laparoscopic and robotic techniques, as well as to engage in translational research focused on metabolic pathways and weight‑loss outcomes. He collaborated with leading investigators on clinical trials evaluating novel bariatric devices and enhanced recovery pathways, resulting in multiple first‑author publications in high‑impact journals. The fellowship also refined his ability to integrate comprehensive pre‑operative assessment with personalized surgical planning, a skill set that he later translated into his aesthetic practice, ensuring that each patient’s unique physiology informs the artistic decisions made in the operating room.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Lalezari’s surgical repertoire is anchored in bariatric surgery, a discipline that demands precise anatomical knowledge, meticulous technique, and a profound understanding of metabolic physiology. Over the course of his career, he has performed thousands of weight‑loss procedures, including sleeve gastrectomies, Roux‑en‑Y gastric bypasses, and revisional surgeries. His expertise in these complex operations has not only yielded impressive weight‑loss outcomes for his patients but also positioned him as a thought leader in the management of obesity‑related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea. By employing state‑of‑the‑art minimally invasive platforms, he minimizes postoperative pain, accelerates recovery, and reduces the incidence of complications, thereby enhancing the overall patient experience.

In addition to his bariatric focus, Dr. Lalezari maintains a robust practice in general surgery, where he addresses a wide spectrum of conditions ranging from hernia repairs to oncologic resections. His proficiency in open and laparoscopic techniques enables him to tailor the operative approach to each patient’s unique anatomy and disease process. He is particularly renowned for his skill in complex abdominal wall reconstruction, a field that requires a nuanced balance of functional restoration and aesthetic consideration. By integrating principles of plastic surgery—such as meticulous tissue handling, strategic flap design, and scar optimization—he consistently achieves durable repairs that preserve both form and function.

Dr. Lalezari’s dedication to minimally invasive surgery extends beyond bariatric applications; he is a certified expert in advanced laparoscopic and robotic platforms, employing these technologies across a variety of procedures to enhance precision and reduce operative trauma. His mastery of robotic surgery, in particular, allows for unparalleled dexterity in confined operative spaces, facilitating intricate suturing and dissection with enhanced visualization. This expertise translates seamlessly into his aesthetic practice, where he leverages minimally invasive techniques for facial rejuvenation, body contouring, and breast surgery. By adopting endoscopic and percutaneous methods, he achieves natural‑looking results with minimized scarring, rapid recovery, and maximal patient satisfaction, reinforcing his reputation as a surgeon who harmoniously blends functional expertise with aesthetic artistry.

Commitment to Patient Safety

Dr. Lalezari’s unwavering dedication to patient safety is reflected in his active involvement with premier professional societies that set the gold standard for surgical excellence. As a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), he adheres to rigorous guidelines that govern peri‑operative care, nutritional management, and long‑term follow‑up for bariatric patients. His participation in ASMBS committees has contributed to the development of evidence‑based protocols that reduce postoperative complications, such as anastomotic leaks and deep vein thrombosis, while promoting optimal weight‑loss trajectories. This leadership role underscores his commitment to advancing the safety culture within the bariatric community.

In addition to his ASMBS affiliation, Dr. Lalezari is a proud member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), an organization that emphasizes continuous quality improvement, ethical practice, and surgical education. Through ACS initiatives, he engages in peer‑reviewed audits, morbidity and mortality conferences, and surgical safety checklist implementations that foster a culture of transparency and accountability. His contributions to ACS task forces have helped refine standards for intra‑operative monitoring, antibiotic stewardship, and patient‑centered communication, all of which directly enhance the safety profile of his operative practice. Moreover, his involvement with the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) further demonstrates his commitment to minimally invasive safety protocols, including the adoption of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways that shorten hospital stays and reduce opioid consumption.

Dr. Lalezari’s dedication to safety is also recognized through prestigious accolades that attest to his clinical excellence. He was honored with the Top Doctor Award by Los Angeles Magazine in 2022, a distinction that reflects his peers’ confidence in his surgical skill, ethical standards, and patient outcomes. In 2021, Healthline Awards named him the Best Bariatric Surgeon, highlighting his superior track record in weight‑loss surgery and his innovative approach to metabolic health. The preceding year, the ASMBS bestowed upon him the Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery Recognition, acknowledging his pioneering use of advanced laparoscopic and robotic technologies to improve patient safety and procedural efficiency. These honors collectively reinforce his reputation as a surgeon who prioritizes patient welfare above all else.
